What is Acne?
Although acne is seen in 85% of adolescents, it is a skin disease that can be seen in 30, 40 years and older.
A typical pimple appears as red blisters with or without inflammation, blackheads known as open blackheads, and white small bumps called closed comedones, and sometimes larger cyst-like structures. Acne is most common on the face. In addition to this region, it can also be seen in the V region on the neck, arms, chest, back and even on the scalp, less frequently on the shoulders. Although it does not cause a serious health problem, early diagnosis and treatment are important as it can leave scars and significantly reduce one’s social confidence. Remember that acne can sometimes mimic other diseases. The diagnosis should be made by a dermatologist (dermatologist) and the treatment should be done under his supervision.
How Does Acne Occur?
Acne occurs as a result of the clogging of fine-grained nozzles called pores on the skin, oil and dead particles of the natural skin known as sebum, under the influence of male hormones, which are common in both sexes. While oil production is increased by the effect of hormones, black and white spots appear first, and then a suitable environment is provided for the growth of bacteria normally found on the skin. Inflammatory and non-inflammatory blisters and cysts result from the breakdown of a hair unit that become clogged and swollen over time. However, you should know that acne is not a microbial disease and is not transmitted. Adolescence, menstruation in women and stress in both sexes are periods when acne can be seen more intensely.
Acne and Heredity
Acne may also occur in people who have not had this problem in their family. However, there is a tendency to start driving at a younger age and drive longer, especially in people with a family history of severe acne. It is therefore particularly important to treat these people early.
Misconceptions About Acne
- Acne is caused by dirt. NO. Acne has nothing to do with dirt. Thinking about it this way, cleaning the excess skin only irritates it. It is sufficient to clean it with a suitable cleaning agent twice a day.
- I have fun if I touch my dots. NO. Acne is not a contagious and bacterial disease. Bacteria that play a role in the formation mechanism are already naturally present on our skin.
- Acne is caused by liver disease. NO. Acne has nothing to do with liver disease. Your doctor may want you to have hormone tests after examining you while listening to your other ailments. There is no need to ask every acne patient to be tested.
- Acne occurs when you eat oil. NO. The relationship with food in acne formation has not been proven. If the person notices that they are aggravating the acne, they should move away from it. Eating healthy is something we already recommend for overall body health.
- Acne is just a cosmetic issue, it will fade over time if left alone. NO. It’s not just a cosmetic issue, because the ability to scar is a longer and more difficult process than treating acne itself. It can also negatively affect a person’s psychology and undermine their self-esteem. It is better to overcome this process in a shorter time and without any problems by using effective treatments that are already available.
- A person with eczema cannot wear makeup. NO. Make-up can be done with the right products as long as you are awake at night. Only thick and layered makeup should be avoided. Instead of a thick foundation, you can choose products in the form of thin powder. You can use powder and blush that do not cause blackheads.
